Fernando Gomez is a multidisciplinary artist with a Latino background whose practice is grounded in ceramics, exploring form, space, and materiality while actively expanding into painting.
Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, he was shaped early on by cultural traditions and community storytelling, which remain central to his work. His first introduction to clay began through participation in a nonprofit art organization during 2002-2006, where he found success at Askew Mosaic Art Studio. There, he contributed to individual and group projects commissioned by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture, gaining early professional experience in community based public art.
Fernando is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art at Texas State University, where his formal training has strengthened his technical skills, material awareness, and conceptual development across multiple disciplines. Ceramics continues to serve as the foundation of his practice, informing his approach to structure, surface, and process in both sculptural and painted forms. Through symbolic forms and material juxtaposition, Gomez’s work investigates personal narrative, sociopolitical culture, and the human condition, inviting reflection and interpretation.
Drawing from lived experience, cultural identity, and broader social issues, his work remains open-ended and contemplative. Influenced by artists and educators who emphasize material integrity, experimentation, and narrative-driven practices, his work continues to evolve as he explores new mediums while remaining rooted in clay.
